Chautauqua County Landfill
RESIDENTIAL RECYCLING INFORMATION
The Chautauqua County Transfer Stations accept the following items for
recycling at no charge unless otherwise noted.
Residents will place different categories of items in separate containers
at the transfer stations.
Glass Jars & Bottles
- Rinse clean and separate by color: clear, green, brown.
Remove labels
and metal rings.
Plastics
- All plastic containers marked with recyclable emblem and a 1 (PET),
2 (HDPE),
3 (PVC), 4
(LDPE), or 5 (PP).
Rinse clean,
remove hard caps, rings, and labels.
Batteries
- Vehicle, tractor, boat, cycle, lawn mower batteries are NOT accepted
for recycling at any Transfer Station.
Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) batteries are accepted for recycling at Walmart's
electronics department and area Radio Shack stores. -OR-

Tires
- Tires may be on rims. Charges apply: Up to 15" - $1.75; 16"-19" -
$2.25; 1000-1200 - $7.25; Oversize - $0.25 per pound.
Cardboard & Brown Paper Bags
- Flatten and keep dry.
ACCEPTABLE: Corrugated cardboard boxes, brown paper bags and fiber
egg cartons.
NOT ACCEPTABLE: Waxed, plastic coated or food-contaminated cardboard
or chipboard boxes.
Newspaper
Keep dry and loose. Inserts acceptable. Telephone books acceptable.
Do
not tie in bundles or place in bags. (May be placed in paper bags at Landfill
Transfer
Station only)
Junk Mail & Assorted Paper
Magazines and catalogs (glue or staple bound), color inserts and
coupons from newspapers, envelopes (with or without windows), sweepstakes
forms.
School paper: math paper, composition paper, construction paper (paint,
crayon or marker OK), textbooks with hard covers removed, soft cover
workbooks.
Nonmetallic wrapping paper and greeting cards.
Office paper: fax paper, copy paper, ledger paper, real estate books,
scrap paper, computer paper, NCR paper. NO blueprints or carbon paper.
Telephone Books: WHITE pages only.
Scrap Metal
Automobile parts, metal window and door frames, brass, steel and
cast iron fixtures, machinery parts, stoves, washing machines, hot water
tanks, copper tubing, aluminum lawn furniture, eavestroughs, other metal
items.
Empty gas tanks/containers are accepted at LANDFILL TRANSFER STATION
ONLY!
Aluminum & Tin/Steel Cans
Aluminum - "rinse clean" and flatten.
Tin/Steel cans - "rinse clean" and remove labels.
Foil, pie plates and aluminum TV dinner trays are also accepted.
Refrigerators & Freezers
Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, any other
item containing Freon: $15.00 charge per item for safe Freon removal.
There will be no charge if Freon is removed by a certified Freon
Removal Technician and so certified on company letterhead including
make and serial number of unit.
Motor Oil.--.NOT ACCEPTED AT TRANSFER STATIONS
NYSDEC Part 360 states...."Service establishments shall accept, at
no additional charge, used engine lubricating oil in quantities not
exceeding five gallons per day from any individual, provided that the
service establishment's used engine lubricating oil retention facility
is not temporarily filled to capacity".
Check with your local service station for disposal information.
Plastic Bags
Plastic grocery bags are NOT accepted at transfer stations for recycling.
Please check with your local grocery store for a plastic bag recycling
bin.
Paint
Paint is accepted at North and South County transfer stations from
April to October at "Paint Exchange Program, call the Landfill for information
on disposal, or check the Household Hazardous
Waste Disposal Program information.
